Re: MIGS 1/31/01 Report

Hi Greg, Ketan -

We had a lot of problems with the webcast today. I haven't done a
complete post mortem - we'll do it in the next day or two and report the
results - but here's what I know happened.

1. Matt Delco, MIG producer/director this semester, was unable to get
the Mbone webcast started when the lecture started. I had a full room -
over 40 people - and I couldn't wait any longer for Matt to get the
software running. He had audio working, but was still debugging video.
He ran into several problems, so we have to figure out exactly what the
problems were and why.

2. The Real webcast started pretty much out of control. Matt didn't
have video working so he couldn't control the camera for the Real
webcast. (Ketan, thanks for the remote message.) Not that it matters,
but the Real webcast is produced by a separate vid-out from the matrix
switcher - the switching is done by the prod/dir using the Mbone stream
to see what is happening. We can't use the Real stream to preview since
there is a 10-15 second delay.

3. I've noticed quite a few messages on wg_multicast talking about
multicast problems on Internet2. We probably need to query them to see
if that impacted the multicast transmission outside Berkeley.

4. The speaker didn't bring slides - he wanted to use a whiteboard. I
got him to use the overhead camera, but the camera stand interfered with
the speaker. We need a better configuration for this usage. Not sure
what, but we need to do something.

All-in-all, a horrible production today. I'd like to schedule a meeting
friday at 2.30 with Matt, Peter, and Erik (if he's here) to discuss what
happened and what needs to be done. We can meet in the colab before the
regular friday research meeting.
