I suppose we can call that omission "Linux Chauvinism"... :-)
Anyway, a rough timeline of Berkeley Unix and its derivatives can be found
at, http://www.netbsd.org/Misc/history.html. And for the development of
the Internet, one of the crucial developments was the inclusion of the
tcp/ip protocols in BSD 4.2 put tcp/ip in many workstations everywhere
very early on... I don't know if we could designate that "Open Source" in
the fashion we have come to appreciate now, ie., the Internet didn't exist
yet with all the collaborative means that make Open Source Development
possible. But I can recall several OS and Net-Protocol projects circa 1980
that were open source in that development source was freely available --
minus cost of distribution media and documentation.
